Yesterday, I adopted a male Schnauzer. When I take him outside it takes him forever to go pee, and it seems like he never poops. How often do your dogs go out and go to the bathroom? Maybe I am taking him out too often, or the new environment just has him a little distracted. I am really paranoid about him having an accident at night. I took him out twice last night, and got up super early with him this morning. Please let me know how often your dogs go out and potty! Thanks!

Congrats on the new dog, how old is he out of curiosity?

My 8 yr old goes out to pee and poo in the morning. He then can go about 8 hrs or more during the day, then he goes to pee maybe 2 times before our night walk where he empties his bladder and has his poo before bed. (generally 20+ min walk).

If your worried about nighttime accidents there is "go here" spray you can buy and spray on a pee pad. It should entice the dog to urinate there if he does need to go during the night.

He is 2 and the sweetest little dog. If I didn't know he was a schnauzer I never would have guessed. He is super quiet, still haven't heard him bark, and completely laid back. He will get excited and play for a little while, but as soon as you are done playing, he is too. He is the best:) I don't really think I have anything to worry about with him going in unwanted places, but I guess I am just a little paranoid. New dog owner you know;)

My two dogs each came to us at the age of 4yrs, one had ben pee pad trained (she lived in an apartment before) and the other had some understanding of going outside for potty, but had many, many accidents inside. (we have no carpets  )

We trained her with lots of patience and praise and not making a deal out of the accidents. During the work days they are alone for 4-5 hours since I only work mornings 'til noon. They are not crated, and now there are no potty accidents.

They go out once in the morning and during the afternoon they go out more often when the weather is nice.

During a day the minimum amount of times they go potty in really bad weather is probably 4-5 times. :)

Wally usually gets to go out 4 times - Early morning (after a night of sleep), Mid morning (before lunch), mid evening (before dinner most times), and just before bed time.

He usually poops just twice a day, and depends on what/how much he ate. If I fed him more "people food" (say a leftover piece of steak), he'll poop later and less. If I feed his regular food, he'll usually poop twice - once at mid morning (likely his dinner coming out) and once either mid evening or before bedtime (his breakfast/lunch coming out).

My 9 months old pup goes out 3 times per day (7am, 7pm, 10pm), and he barely has accidents now. At the beginning, when we got him at around 3 months old, he couldn't go out for walks coz he needed his vaccines but couldn't get it coz he was recovering from parvo. Only when he reached 6 months old we started taking him out. So at first, he only wanted to do it inside, but after a while he finally did it outside!

Maybe your dog needs time to feel safe to do it outside, and then he will eventually get used to it and is able to hold it for long.

In line with what others are saying, I think 3-5 pees/day and 2 poos/day is reasonable. 1 poo/day can be okay depending on what the dog ate and depending on age. Give the dog a chance to go potty soon after waking up and right before bed.

Also note that the quality of the dog food you buy makes a huge difference. Premium, all-natural dog food will be digested more efficiently by your dog and they will poop less. I had a neighbor who worked for Kroger grocery stores, bought the generic cheapo store brand, and his dog was having massive poops all day long because the food wasn't getting digested well.

Eventually your dog should be able to hold it in for ~8 hours, whether it's over night or while you're away during the day.

Jax is now going out 3-4 times a day. He usually just poops once, but sometimes twice. He is on loyal dog food, and he doesn't eat that much, so just pooping once is usually good enough. He sleeps in his crate and is in during the day and has not had an accident yet!
