Hi everyone, I'm hoping this forum will be a great resource for selecting a dog breed, possibly for finding a dog to adopt, and then continuing to ask questions, as I'm sure I'll have many. I might even have some good stories to share. There's more to this obviously* but I'll pop that into my first real post. Thanks, and I'm happy to be part of the forum!

*I chose the username Wannabe because I'm just a prospective dog owner at this point, but have wanted a dog my whole life.

I would recommend getting a copy of the book Before and After You Get Your Puppy by Ian Dunbar as you prepare for dog ownership. He goes into a lot of detail about the different stages of puppy development and gives good explanations about why you should be doing certain types of training at certain stages. Dunbar can be a bit intimidating, and you might feel a bit like your puppy will turn into Cujo if you don't get things exactly right. Just do your best to follow the program, and you will be doing better than 90% of pet owners.

Avoid any of the trainers who advocate establishing yourself as an alpha. Dogs aren't scheming to take over your household any more than you are scheming to move your parents into their cellar so you can take over their bedroom.

Welcome to the forum! What are you looking for in a dog? Large, small, medium? Lots of energy, or more relaxed? Games, walks, hikes? Obedience competitions?

A lot to think about!

The answers to those questions went into my first real post (now quite a discussion): We are ready to get our first dog - doing due diligence...
