Hey everyone,

I'm new here, and way excited to be around other dog lovers like myself. I'm currently poochless... My basset hound Otis passed away a couple months ago. I'm currently looking for a dog to buy for my son who is about to turn one years old. Any ideas on what dog to buy?

Sorry about your loss!:(

But welcome to the forum!:)

Personally I would check out local shelters and rescues to see the different dogs available in your area!:)
Make a list of the charateristics you would like your next dog to have!
Things such as energy level, grooming demands, temperament, size, good with kids, good with other animals, etc.
And seeing as your son is about to turn 1 year old, I would personally go for an adult dog that has been tested around very young children and is already house trained! I also like lower energy, calm dogs for families with very young children! Parents with young kids are often busy enough looking after kids and don't always have the time to exercise the dog!;)

Shelters/rescues will be glad to help match you with a dog that fits your requirements! Choosing a dog this way means that it is far more likely to be a good fit for your lifestyle.;)

And if you are set on buying a puppy, then read this sticky!:)
It will help you to find a reputable breeder!;)

Just be sure you are prepared for A LOT of work! You'll have 2 seperate youngsters who will require your constant attention!:p

Welcome!!:)

And I second Kmes's suggestions, I know from experience that having a puppy and a 1 yr. old isn't always the best mix. Not saying it can't work out but it's a lot more work. ;)
