Our dog is a 13 yr old lab and is very well loved. As his hearing and sight has deteriorated his barking has got worse to the point that a neighbour has now complained. The vet has told us he is just checking where we are and orientating himself but we don't know what to do. Even when we are in the room with him, he still barks for our attention. Any ideas?

Uncontrolled barking

Our dog is a 13 yr old lab and is very well loved. As his hearing and sight has deteriorated his barking has got worse to the point that a neighbour has now complained. The vet has told us he is just checking where we are and orientating himself but we don't know what to do. Even when we are in the room with him, he still barks for our attention. Any ideas?

When he barks do you talk to him and give him attention? If so, then he thinks if he barks you will give him attention. Try this, when he barks don't talk to him, just remove him from the room (maybe put him in the bedroom and close the door and walk away)Don't talk to him or pet him, no attention. After he stops barking you can let him out of the room and give him attention. Do this every time he barks. If he is outside barking, bring him into the house (remember don't give him any attention or talk to him)He can come outside again when the barking stops. Then take his mind off the neighbor by playing with him or take him for a walk etc. I tried this with my dog and it seems to be working, he is barking less. Hope this helps.
