Hi! I'm a college student planning to get her first dog sometime in the next few months. I've grown up with dogs my entire life, but this dog will be my first dog as an adult. I joined to get outside opinions on which breed might be a good fit for me, and for advice once I have my dog.

Hello and welcome! This is a great place for advice I find.
As a student, have you considered how much time and care a puppy is going to need from you? Its really like having a baby in the house the first year, and you have to be able to sacrifice allot of time and sleep. College is such an experience on its own. it can be overwhelming and very busy socially too. Wont it be better to do this a little bit later after college?
Just something to think about.

What is your living situation?
I would not recommend a puppy. They are SO much work
A nice older calm dog from a rescue could work
I would be open to different breeds
