My GSP girl has a bald section on her throat from her collars rubbing her. They are not too tight, all are fit with about 2 fingers space. At home we have an electronic dog door so the cat cant escape so she has to wear a collar for the door "key". I work in a dog shop and she is with me everyday so she wears a collar pretty much 24/7. She has all sorts of collars some nylon, a RuffWear rope collar, a flat leather one, and a rubberized nylon for when she is in the field. She is not red or sore under her collar but being a show dog I would like her to have all of her coat if possible.

I am wondering what people recommend to prevent the hair loss?

Probably no collar whenever you can. My dogs do not wear collars unless we are leaving the property. Then when we get home I take them right off.

Spindrift is a great company! I'd go with the cozy collar but with the plastic quick release buckle. This is what my friend has on her very short haired lurcher-type, and it doesn't rub like other collars had. I have had their metal quick release buckle on their basic collar on one of my girls--it rubbed and she doesn't even have short hair. Not a fault of the company, just the buckle design (edgier than the plastic).

Also, as was being discussed recently on another thread, wider collars rub less in some posters' experiences.

Most show people I know either keep collars off their dogs or used rolled leather collars to prevent hair breakage.

I've been giving my dog more "naked" time indoors and it really has helped in getting rid of bare spots,although I still can't say his fur is fit for show. With my experience wide collars rub more,so the main thing that helps is just keeping collars off as much as possible.

Spindrift collars are really prone to breaking buckles. I used to work at a store that sold them and a LOT of them broke and had to be replaced. The metal ones are better, but as Crock mentioned, they rub.

Places like Collarmania sell no buckle collars that you can get satin or felt lined.
