Both my dogs have been on grain-free foods their entire life and no antibiotics ever. Occasionally I feed them leftovers from my paleo plate...one of my dogs is 10 yrs old and she developed a uterine infection and the other dog is almost 3 yrs old and now she has a urinary tract infection. So I fed Wellness brand for a while and then switched to Iams Grain Free cause Walmart sold it. My older dog has stomach pains, lots of rumbling noises in her stomach which I thought would go away once she was spayed but she is still not well....So now I am wondering whether grain free is actually working to give them better health. I was looking at Hill's Science Diet Digestive Care and people RAVE that it's great for digestive issues and it contains all the stuff I was trying to avoid letting my dog eat. They say illness comes from a bad diet and yet they were supposedly eating the best. In my opinion there must be something missing in grain free dog food.

I know this is not a question...but if you've had a similar experience or know of a great dog food for digestive issues besides Hill's Science Diet which is incredibly expensive, please share.

Urinary problems are usually not the caused by food. It is not the grain free that caused the problem maybe its the salt in the leftovers you spoke of. Humans tend to load their food with salt which dogs should never have. You only have to use the RX food when the dogs actually have a UTI. When its over you can switch back to a high quality food. Since they both have the problem, make sure to have loads of fresh water around. By that I mean wash the bowl frequently and make sure it is filtered water. I would also wet their food. Make sure they get out to relieve their selves frequently. The rumbling in the dogs stomach is probably caused by the poor quality of the purina. Switch back to the wellness. they were doing fine on it why switch it is a high quality food.

I'm feeding them Iams not Purina. I"m assuming it's something in the IAMS that is bothering the dog with the rumbling stomach. I switched to Iams cause it was local whereas Wellness had to be shipped to me. I would not feed my dogs Purina.

The immune system, which fights off infections is directly related to diet. Toxicity or deficiency is the cause of disease. My dogs have access to food and water at all times and I"m on a Paleo diet, not a SAD diet. And all animals need salt..it's a basic element of farm feeds because they need it.

They had different problems...only one has a UTI..the other had an infected uterus. But for some reason they both had subpar immune systems, was my point.

Iams is not any better still full of byproducts. If you want a food that will help build a strong immune system maybe try Honest Kitchen. It is the closest to home cooking which I think is the healthiest over kibble. I am not a vet but have had many dogs around me from running a boarding facility to being a groomer. Over the years I have learned a few basic things. Fresh wholesome dog food makes a healthier dog with a stronger immune system. Some kibble has lower value items like byproducts digest and mystery fat. I don't think those things make a strong immune system. Again that is just my opinion.

I have 2 pit bulls and since they were puppies I have been feeding them Whole Earth Farms grain and poultry free food and I have no problems with it. It's for all ages so it should be fine with your old dog.

get off iams and avoid purina hills royal canin eukanuba and please go back to the wellness if you want to change food id go with a different flavor of wellness or there earthborn, fromm, acana to think of but if a food works dont need to change it otherwise.
