So Jessie since was on Royal canin anallergenic was fed fish oil as coat was so dry and continued when raw fed till early this year i stopped it. Recently after belly inflammation added it to her diet only she came cuddles onto my arm/shoulder and my cardigan smelt of anal glands and so did she. I spoke to a friend on facebook which is @Rain who advised me to stop it for few days and try a different brand. Figured id go with teh brand we used previously as it was a different brand i was using.

All good except straight after feeding her the fish oil omg the gas! it is really bad like she has poo in the house and it was soft but easyish to pick up.

the gas has continued and she has gassed out me, my lounge, bed sheets, my dad and mum. Its really strong and horrible. I know it isnt anal glands as 2 years in may she had them taken out. Now since giving fish oil she also pee in my house massive amount and not long ago in parents lounge, can it affect urine PH OR urine problems? what are the side effects of using it in dogs? i tried coconut oil and her stomach was always gurgling from it and poo wasnt as nice also weight gain. So thought of fish oil bad mistake.

Anyone any idea, advice or suggestions please?

That sounds really abnormal for fish oil ime, especially if you were giving it to her before hand with zero issues. I would be pretty alarmed about that and call your vet for suggestions!

Haha yeah, good luck at the vet keep up updated! It's the peeing and pooing everywhere that has me worried! I can understand if she had a stomach upset maybe she'd poop but the peeing is really weird and I wouldn't think that would be a side effect of anything involving a stomach upset but of course I could be wrong!

I think the vet is your best bet. You might try a bland diet until then? Perhaps its her current food?

current food is usual rabbit and goat and rabbit venison and tripe. only thing changed in past week is added k9 natural treats to diet for bit variety since doing well on ziwipeak venison treats but they dont have heart and kidney in them like k9 natural ones.

I can still smell her farts from the cushion she was laying on thats how bad it is. Jess has had issues with urine in past and that was due to food with the fruit and veg but they excluded. Will ring vet to see if need consult and def keep you all updated. bland diet would be tripe.

Hmm just thought of something, how slow did you start her on the fish oil. Did you do it little by little working up to the full dose, of start her off on the full dose? If you didn't start slow then her tummy may just need time to adjust, and you could try taking her off of it for a couple weeks then if the gas stops start her back on it but do so slowly working your way up to the full dose.

Zody gets gas on fish based foods, even when I transition him onto it slowly, but it does get a bit better after he's been on it awhile, never completely goes away though. It also causes him to develop a doggy smell so I've learned to just not feed him those foods.

If you changed food brands but kept going with the same fish oil, wouldn't it make more sense that the problem is the food, not the fish oil?

Trucker had really bad gas with the first fish oil brand the vet put him on but this brand, Welactin® for Dogs, has been great (no gas, no more dry skin).

Well in the past she had a full capsule so did that every few days at first then daily last two days just had poo not long ago half solid and direha. Dr mike thinks could be intolerance or too much so far but now im thinking the colitis has flared up because she was straining after pooing. It also wasnt comfortable for her to poo so suggests lots of inflammation.

Vet says give her some time (few weeks) then try four drops only and see what happens.

She on raw diet from same company get from. Its is the fish oil for sure even the vet says that. This food she on agrees with her and doesnt cause it. She was like this on fish based kibble but was ok with the oil until now.

Thanks will look into it but reluctant to even try fish oil again yet.

ok update: yes it was the fish oil to some extent with smelling of anal glands and the farts/loose stool BUT a few weeks after stopping fish oil it was back with full force it kept happening and i was sick of it. got some rabbit venison and tripe b4 xmas masses of it which she had been eating previously as well , well well i spoke to a raw facebook group who said their dogs are the same after venison and they suspect that!

So in new year i had help from cordane to help me work out how much bone in, organs, and meat Jessie requires from woofles. stayed away from venison and got horse and veal does so well on the horse only time it happened again was after i forgot the important to Jessies guts the bone in meal! she had diareha for day or two but all good now but i did introduce veal too fast as well! so going to introduce veal eg 40gm in next day or so since poops normal and no bad farts since direha :) she loves her organs too btw which are so slimey ugh. so i suspect it was venison as well

Watched an interesting program about vitamins and supplements. Most fish oil supplements are rancid. When fish are processed and the oils are extracted the combination of light and oxygen breaks the oils down very quickly. The plastic containers allow oxygen in which causes further breakdown of the oil. The study said that 70% of the fish oil supplements were rancid. No wonder it causes gas and digestive problems.

Interesting about the rancid oil. I bought a pricey bottle of Norwegian Cod Liver Oil for my girl, and she started having tummy problems right away. Horrible gas, like horrible! and a greenish slimy diarrhea. At this point she'd had the oil for 2 days, so I stopped it as it was the only thing new. Within 2 days she was fine and back to normal.

About 2 months later I tried it again with both dogs, and they both had the bad gas and loose stools. Googled like crazy and found several people with similar experiences, and others said it made no sense as the oil was so good for dogs.

So either I should have given smaller amounts to lead into adding it (as I've just read here), or the oil was bad. Maybe I'll try buying more in a year and seeing how that goes. It's too bad, they both LOVED it, although their breath was unbearable for about a week!

Cod liver oil is different than fish oil. You also need to be careful with cod oil doses because it has a lot of vitamin A and that is fat soluble, so you can overdose on too much.
