i wanted to know if its better to feed your dog in the morning or in the evening, and why.

the reason i ask is because i feed my dog once a day, and this is because when i was feeding him 2X a day (same amout of food per day as i do now) he was alot chunkier and he has a luxating patella (only is a problem when he jumps) so i want to keep him on the thinner side.

i feed him taste of the wild 1/2 cup a day he currently is 21lbs (we would like to get him to 18-19ish lbs) when i was feeding him 1/4 cup 2X a day he was 24lbs (i currently feed him in the morning for no other reason than convenience)

*we hike 3 miles every day*

Personally I believe that all dogs should recieve smaller portion meals atleast twice a day...I've always fed Luke atleast 3 times...but we're not on a set schedue, he's not crated so he can go out to pee wheenver he so chooses. I know not everyone has that option but definitely I'd feed more than once and no free feeding.
I'm not sure how feeding your dog twice made him gain more weight, when in reality, the more smaller meals we get throughout the day, the better our digestive system works and the more our metabolism kicks in. It's the same idea as with humans..if you only eat one big meal a day, your body conserves fat and calories more than it does if you were eating more often.
Just my opinion, and if you had a large/giant breed I'd DEFIITELY tell you feed atleast twice,no question.;)

well he is a 4 year old Lhasa Apso (small dude). his old vet where we used to live reccomended feeding him once rather than twice to help slim him down so i just kinda followed along with his suggestions. the last time we went for his lyme vaccine the vet that did it for him (not his normal vet where we live) said to feed him once a day at night, i didnt really like the vet so i just said ok to get it over with faster as Dexter hates the vet, and i continued to feed him in the AM. we live in an apartment complex so free roam of outside is a big no no lol. i hate free feeding so i wouldnt ever do it (dont even free feed my cat lol she gets meals)

*EDIT*
his old vet suggested slimming him down because when i got him from the pound they were feeding him 3 cups of food a day so he got really fat. the addition of TOTW rather than iams and slowly going down to 1/2 cup worked out really well for him :)

Hi,

You failed to give us the breed of dog he is.

However I would consult a vet on the feeding chedule for your dog some dogs are subject to low bllod sugar or hypoglycemia.

I personally would feed the dog twice per day just split your 1/2 cup in to 1/4 cup, if that is what is recommended for him.

There is also weight management foods that are available on the market.

Ok He is a small dog you have to watch him for hypoglycemia might not be a concern now because of his weight but I would be careful as he loose more weight. A more active lifestyle might do him well too longer walks around the block. I too don't see why you shouldn't feed him twice per day.

Investigate the weight management foods, taste of the wild might have one.

hes a Lhasa Apso.
i prefer to feed him TOTW as he has a sensitive tummy and it seems to be the only food that doesnt give him angry butt and it also has helped w/ his dry skin (he gets the lamb one which is their lower cal food)

It's been my experience that most vets are totally clueless when it comes to feeding and the nutritional needs of dogs, especially when you start getting into individual breeds, so I take what vets say about it with a grain of salt. Does he get treats? All I can tell you is that if you're going to continue feeding him once a day you'll have to just slowy lower his food amount until you notice him losing weight...and up the amount of exercerise, also excersise more than once a day if possible. the problem with droppiing food amounts when only feeding once a day is they feel hungry and will act it. ;)

well we do our 3 mile hike once a day but we play ALOT and go for frequent potty walks (i dont work so we have alot of time to play) he doesnt get very many treats only for when he goes in his crate or we do some training and i usually use his kibble for treats.

ive been feeding him once a day for a while now and it has been working, and i wouldnt want to reduce him to less than 1/2 cup because i already feel that may not be enough (ive worked more with large breeds)

ive also not noticed him acting hungry (hes not much of a begger, unless i eat cheese its lol) hes more interested in playing than eating...you would think hes a puppy lol

ok so the food is good whatever he is happy with is good.

Feed him twice per day as recommended on the dog food.

I am here looking at the lable now and it says for a dog in the 10 - 20 lb range should get 3/4 - 1 1/3 cups per day just split that amount in half. which one of the TOTW are you using is it Sierra Mountain Formula or Pacific Stream Canine Formula.

According to the AKC the ideal weight for a Lhasa Apso is 13-15lbs, the feeding schedule above with 3/4 cup of the TOTW dog food divided in half fed twice per day should be good for your dog.

Lets hope that he gets down to his ideal weight soon.

Good Luck and let me know how it goes.

I would do twice a day...if 1/4 cup am and 1/4 cup pm is causing your dog to be overweight I would venture to say he is getting some food elsewhere....do you give him treats? Has he had his blood checked recently?

he gets the Sierra Mountain Formula.

hes taller & longer than the AKC standard lol thats y hes heavier. he was dumped at the pound by a puppy mill because he wouldnt breed anymore (i dont know y they would use him as he is VERY far from the akc standard...but it was a puppy mill after all) he also has 1 blue eye and an extreme under bite lol

ill split his meals in 1/2 and see how his weight goes, he will be getting weighed tomarrow morning as hes getting his teeth cleaned so that will be a starting point for him. i dont want to increase his amount of food due to him gaining weight so easily.

granted i haven't worked with dogs very long but the 2 1/2 years that i have (worked at a boarding kennel) all the dogs we saw getting the bag recommendations were fat...thats just from my experience

I feed once a day due to my own schedule. It is usually in the evening, but that is when all of us wake up. I have successfully converted all my pets into night shifters.

im the only one who takes care of him, my fiancee just plays with him (which i expected when i adopted him) so i wasnt giving him extras (im sure he wouldnt mind lol)

he only gets treats when he goes into his crate or durring training & i usually use his kibble for treats

yes he had his blood tested in feb (when he was fatter lol) and everything came back good.

I even have my parrots get angry when I wake them up before noon. The dogs usually lift their head up, groan, and then lay back down before noon.
XD lol thats great! i think Dexter and i would be night shifters if our neighbors werent having what sounds like bowling ball throwing contests lol also if i try to keep Dex awake when hes tired he goes into his crate to sleep (the leave me alone zone lol)

LOL, only Missy is crate trained out of my crew and that is because she is a chewer. She can't be trusted alone in the house without destroying my boxers, remotes, or other things that she finds. Everyone has free reign throughout the house while I am home. Betty will hide under the bed during thunderstorms or nights filled with fireworks.

I think it all depends on what works best for each individual dog. Try some different routines and see what seems to be best for him. You can read him better than anyone, and I really think it is different for different dogs.

Our dogs, for instance, must eat twice a day because they could not possibly consume enough in one sitting to last them for 24 hours, but that is because they are young and active. Most dogs I've had ate in the late afternoon, just once a day, and that worked great. In general, I don't like to feed a dog a big meal just before a lot of exercise, so that will affect when you can feed him. Some dogs wake up hungry, others, such as our Tessa, does not like to eat first thing in the morning... she'll only eat after we've gone for a 30 minute walk! (she's too excited about the walk to be able to eat first)

So I guess all I'm saying is that there are many "correct" answers and you just need to find the one that works for you and your dog, and trust yourself. ;)

I have always fed 2x and day because dogs tend to build up acid in their stomach when it gets to empty. I fail to see how splitting the about in half and feeding it 2x a day would make a dog gain weight. Lack of exercise and being over fed are the reasons for weight gain in a healthy dog. I also think in terms of myself going without breakfast or dinner would be unthinkable so why should my dog. Would you like to go 24 hours without a meal?

Dexter is at the vet now getting his chompers cleaned :) he is weighing in at 19.5 lbs. i did talk to his vet about it and she suggested that he be fed once because when he was being fed twice, he wasnt losing weight and nothing has changed since then except for the once a day rather than twice a day feeding.

i actually eat normally once a day, i only eat when im hungry its not really a giant meal either.

although a lot of you feel that its important that dogs be fed 2x a day, my dog has done great on a 1x feeding, as have my mothers dogs and the dog we had growing up. my main reason for posting this was asking which time is better to feed, not asking if i should feed one or twice a day. i will continue doing what im doing as he is a happy healthy little guy (minus that bad knee lol)
