Im all about feeding your dog a homemade diet. But, I strongly believe you should hire a vet nutritionist before doing so. A homemade diet has made all the difference in our dog Lily, I wish I could afford to do it for my other two girls.

Why is with our dogs we should hire a nutritionist but with children we just feed them what ever we think is appropriate. I think the dog food companies have convinced us that we cant without their help or a nutritionist. There are only a few things that a dog requires to stay healthy. I have raised vegetarian dogs that live to be 22 years old so apparently meat is not a factor. I always use a good supplement to cover any short falls especially on a veggie diet but a diet with a variety of 50% meat and the rest veggies and legumes will keep a dog in great health with lots of energy great coats and clean teeth. After all this is what AAFCO thinks is a good test of what make a healthy diet for our pets. If the dog does not drop dead or loose to much weight the food is approved. That is not my idea of a balanced meal for my dogs.

You should also probably be aware that “AAFCO feeding trials consist of at least eight dogs being fed the same diet for a mere 26 weeks (approximately six months). During this time, 25% of the dogs (two animals) can be removed from the test and the dogs eating the food can lose up to 15% of their weight and condition; the food will still pass the test and be labeled "complete and balanced."

Offhand, we should hire a nutritionist for pets because there is a lot more information available in the common sphere of knowledge on what makes a good human diet versus what is available for pet diets. For instance, for balanced diets in human children there is the food pyramid/whatever they have now. For other diets, I actually would suggest consulting a nutritionist for human children as well.

Another factor is that humans/children can speak up and tell us when something is wrong due to vit deficiencies. Pets don't have that option.

Childhood obesity is a ridiculous epidemic... so my vote is that people are doing a very crappy job of feeding their children without help and probably SHOULD find a nutritionist...

And, with Emma's dog, doing a diet on her own would have been a terrible idea...

Vet Nutritionists who go through 4 years of vet school plus 2-3 years of a residency solely in nutrition are going to know more about your dogs physiology and nutritional needs than you do, sorry. (The "you" being a collective "You", not an attack on Dawnben specifically).


There is not a single pet vitamin supplement that is 100% appropriate in any home-cooked meal. Some nutrients will be over done, others under-supplemented. THIS is the reason you need a nutritionist, to know what is missing and what to give.

Children eat a variety of foods, most dogs dont. Without a proper supplement like Balance It how do you know your dog is getting all the nutrients they need? It only cost me $150 to hire a nutritionist for Lily, so its not really that expensive.
