Emergency fund

Im planning on starting an emergency fund for my dogs. One is aging and will need a dental soon, my younger one, I just want to be prepared and I have two rescues on the way. I was wondering, if any of you guys have one, how much of your paycheck do you typically put aside and into the fund? this is just an fund for vet stuff that might come up, I've already saved up lots for my two soon to be arrivals. I want to be as prepared as possible for any emergency but at the same time i don't want to put a giant chunk of all my paychecks into it you know?

It depends on how much you want to save, and how quickly you want to save it.

If you get paid twice a month, and put aside $40 each paycheck, by the end of the year you'd have saved $960. Not a bad amount if you don't have to use it and keep saving.

You could also get a care credit card and use that for vet emergencies, usually if you pay it off within 6 months it'll be interest free.

Thank you! That sounds like a great plan

I think my bank automatically puts $15 a month in. Bank of America also has a "keep the change" program, so every time you use your debit card, it rounds up the purchase to the nearest dollar and the "change" goes to your savings. The change really does add up if you use your debit card a lot, and you don't notice it disappearing at all.

Have you thought about pet insurance for the younger one? My vet recommends Trupanion but I went with Healthy Paws for my new puppy.

I have thought about pet insurance and to me it doesn't seem totally worth it, I'd rather just save up on my own. I've really REALLY thought about it because my younger one goes to the vet sooo often, over the summer we went every two weeks for allergies, it was nuts! I know it might not make sense but I've def thought about it and I've decided to just go with the emergency fund and my vet accepts care credit, I've never had to use it but I have good credit so I'm sure I'd be accepted if the need arose
