Hi, am new to the forum , just had our Lab come back from the Vets and was informed he has kidney disease , He was put on a Renal support canned food from Royal Canin .. Am looking for a cheaper alternative to this food preferably non prescription, as money is tight .. and with the next round of tests after the bill today we need to find an alternative .Both his BUN and Creantin levels were sky high , they think from a form of Lymes disease. Any suggestions would be welcome ..Thanks

Up date for our lab ,, he's about stopped eating all together even favorite soft treats , and has been getting a bag of a saline solution and water every night ,Our Daughter in laws a tech at our vets hospital and some pills .during the day he's only drinking water when I bring him to the stream down back , other than that he doesn't show any pain and still runs around outside though now not for too long, comes in and gets on the couch ( his) and sleeps most of the time . Just trying to find some food or treats that hell eat to put something into his stomach .starting to think the saline introvenus every night is all keeping him going , any ideas on making him comfortable if we stop the saline . Like I said he doesn't seem in any pain just sleepy .

Hi I also have a dog who is in the very beginning stages of renal failure. She is going to be 11 years old in November. She is on Purinia N/F to slow the process. You can try cooking for your dog this web site has recipes but you will need your vet to approve it. https://secure.balanceit.com/tools/ez2/index.php
If you discontinue the s/q fluids your dog's kidneys will not be able to filters the toxins from his blood. He needs the extra fluids to help his kidneys work. He will become nauseous and stop eating. The fluids will not reverse the kidney disease. It will only make him more comfortable. The special diet helps cut down on what his body has to process so that his kidneys do not have to work so hard to eliminate the toxins. I am so sorry. You could also shop on line to see if you can find the renal diet for a cheaper price. Royal Canine is not the only company that makes Kidney diets. Science Diet and Purinia make them too. You could ask your vet to write a script.
