I've had my dog for about 18 months, he's around 8 years old and a border collie cross. I knew his previous owner who had him for about 4 years but he was an outside dog who didnt get much attention. My problem is i have a 1 year old niece and the other day he went to bite her as she was walking past him. Her mum is already nervous around dogs and this has just made the situation worse. At the moment our dog isn't used to being around young children so i would appreciate any tips on how to work on this problem bearing in mind my niece probably wont be visiting for a very long time! Any help much appreciated. Thanks. x

I wasn't there to see it my boyfriend was, he said he got to him just before he managed to do any damage. He is nervous around her which we are aware of but also thort he might be a bit jealous as he seems to sulk and go to his bed when she comes or usually walks away if she comes close. So she probably did just get in his space. I could just do with any tips on how to get him used to children.

start having children bring him high value food...like chicken or beef pieces...

They don't have to hand it to the dog, have them toss it at him at a distance that is comfortable for him.

If hes "sulking" or walking away, that is avoidance behavior, he just wants nothing to do with the kids...this is fine IMO, as long as he can get away completely. If hes avoiding and the kid invades his personal space bubble, you will likely get a fear bite.
