Our 16 year old dog has several health issues (kidney disease etc) and recently developed an ulcer which we are treating with Pepcid, prescribed medicine and diet. It’s improving but she is still vomiting and has excessive drooling periodically. The question we have is what action to take when she is excessively drooling which we assume is related to acid etc. do we feed her or let it pass?. Eating with her other issues is critical at this point. Any feedback would be appreciated.

it is best to take her to the vet. my girl had an ulcer which put a hole in her intestine...this all happened suddenly w/o warning and was due to one of her anti inflammatory tabs. she was lucky.

Thank you for the quick reply. Was there any unique symptoms of the hole in the intestine versus an ulcer. Yes, she sees the vet a couple of times a week for the other things she is dealing with. just looking for some input over the weekend while we deal with her issues. Thank you again!

if she showed symptoms i surely missed them. to me it happened suddenly-on the outside. i woke up to find her lying on the floor in the hallway at midnight...fetal position...the lower part of her tummy was hard as rock and she couldnt move....it was painful for her to move....at the vet's, she seemed like she was getting better and they offered to let me take her home...i said no....the next day she was worse...i was told that poop was getting into the hole and so it looked like she was getting better...messy surgery i was told....the vet told me an ulcer is a rare secondary effect of Deramaxx (anti inflammatory) tab....she was on it daily for life....i believe it was excessive dosage as she was also receiving anti-imflammatory thru a monthly injection (which i found out 4 months after surgery.

I am so sorry that you girl is having this problem. Unfortunately Deramaxx can cause gastro-intestinal ulcers, It is one of the side effects in some dogs. Was the injection she was getting Adequan?

yes it's Adequan
Wow, that is frightening. We will stay far away from that medicine. Appreciate the responses. This is a difficult time for us and we are trying everything to help her.
all anti-inflammatories create ulcers (I'm told) with excessive use....in my girl's situation the anti inflammatory in Deramaxx + the anti inflammatory in Adequan probably became excessive....it happened when she was on both.....just have to google side effects of all meds....i tend to think the use was excessive because in her situation, to this day, she does not have any side effects of any meds that she's been on or is on

I too had an older dog who had mobility issues. Trying to find a balance of quality of life when treating with nsaids can be difficult. She was also on Deramaxx briefly but could not take it because of vomiting. So, she was switched to Gallaprant which she did not have problems with. Tramadol for the really painful days. She also could not take Gabapentin (neuro pain) because it made her loopy. She was on Carafate (Sucrulfate) and Cerenia because of her kidneys. She was on prescription food for kidney failure as the buildup of the toxins sometimes made her not want to eat. It is a catch 22. Choosing what makes your dog the most comfortable and gives the best quality of life sometimes sacrifices other health concerns. She eventually succumbed to a brain tumor. You just never know in life. Keep her as comfortable as possible.
