My pug who's been in the family for 2 years is now refusing to go in the backyard since the addition of another pug. He will poop and pee when we take him for a walk but seems anxious when we try to go to the back yard with him.

Did something happen out there? Dogs can make strange associations - a friend's dog who was asleep under a coffee table and banged her head when she woke "blamed” the ceiling fan and growled at it whenever she came in the room. Could night time visitors be leaving their scent?

You could try desensitising him to it - one pace towards the yard, mark the behaviour with a clicker or sound and reward. It will take time but it is possible.
