I have not had a dog with meningitis, but I know it is a very serious disease in any mammal.

The symptoms you describe sound pretty severe. I too would be very concerned. It might be time to take your little one for a second opinion to a different vet. I would do so quickly, tomorrow for sure.

I'm wondering if they hit a nerve or something when they put the microchip in? I know that's a long shot (I am not that familiar with microchipping, I don't chip my animals, and I have never heard of it causing a reaction), but if it seems to have occured directly after implantation.......

Why do they think it's meningitis? Does she have a fever? Is the head & neck stiff? Are they considering other illnesses, too? It seems pretty rare - have their been reported cases in your area?

That's great you have an appointment in the morning. Hopefully they figure it out this time!

Please let us know what you learn. ;)

At 11 months old, this could be many many things. I'd think the microchip is a red-herring. If she's not hospitalized on IV antibiotics and fluids, that's probably what I'd do next. Plus, a lot more testing needs to be done for her (what has been?)

What's happened since your original post?

update......

the vets took her in all day yesterday as she hit an all time low thursday night/friday morning, they have done alot of blood tests and it is looking like its an infection but they are still unsure, they have changed her antibiotic and she has perked up abit but she is still not jumping up at all and not handling steps etc. well. we've got her back at home now and will be continuing with the new antibiotics for 5 days so fingers crossed she will gradually be back to normal.

Thanks for the update! Hope she improves soon. 5 days seems like a fairly conservative duration for the antibiotics...

Ours has an autoimmune disorder, that manifests as meningitis, though there is no bacteria or virus present, its referred to as 'sterile meningitis'. For reasons not understood, her immune system started to attack her central nervous system. The symptoms were the same as bacterial or viral meningitis, though the treatment was very different, She was on a massive dose of steroids to blunt her immune system, which did provide symptomatic relief. After about four months we slowly weaned her off the steroids, but when we got her completely off, in ten days she relapsed, so we got to go through the entire ordeal again. Once we got it into remission, we kept her on a very small every other day dose, which we still do, but she has been in full remission for over two years. Your description of your dogs symptoms sound like the symptoms ours had, lots of pain, very difficult for her to move or walk, and only did so very slowly and in tiny steps. Its heartbreaking to see them suffer so much, but so great to see them recover. Lets hope yours recovers quickly and completely.
