Monday morning I took Carly out for our usual walk around the neighborhood. He spotted some birds and while I can often talk her down from trying to chase them if I see them in time, she surprised me by lunging without warning. She can only go as far as I allow her on the leash of course, so I stood my ground and she got to the end of the line, kind of flipped around (she's fairly strong), and ended up skidding in some mud on the sidewalk. I think she pulled something in her leg because she wouldn't put any weight on it and lay down, wimpering. I carried her a ways (she's almost 50 pounds so I couldn't tote her very far) and when I set her down gently she seemed to be able to walk on it. We only had a block to go, so we took it slowly.

It so happened that we had a vet appt that morning for her heartworm test, so I mentioned the incident then. The vet said she may have sprained it and to try to keep her from chasing squirrels in the yard if possible. Ever since then she's usually ok, but every now and then the leg (rear leg) will bother her and she'll favor it or lay down. Once she gets up again it's fine. I am trying to keep her from running and we quit walks for a couple of days (went out this morning for a short one but took our time).

Does this sound like anything to be concerned about? Anyone have their dog experience something similar? I'm wondering how long to wait before calling the vet again.

Did the vet check her knee cap at all? It might be popping in and out.
No, she didn't. I did a quick google search on this and it definitely sounds like a possibility. Thanks for the tip...I'll read more when I have time later tonight.

Talked to the vet today and she says she thinks it's more likely a sprain or torn ligament, based on feeling the area when we were in Monday. We are supposed to have her on extra rest this weekend...lots of crate time, leashed potty breaks outside to prevent running or jumping, etc.

Now I'm worried about her being incredibly bored this weekend. She's pretty active, loves her walks, playing fetch (even indoors down our long hallway), etc. I can do some scent games but other than that I'm not sure how to keep her happy. Some car rides, maybe.

This is an awesome group...thanks for the tip!

Carly seems better today after seeming a lot worse on Saturday. She's doing ok although I can tell she misses her walks and her freedom in the backyard. Glad we're leashing potty breaks though as the first thing we saw yesterday morning after stepping out side was a squirrel! I know she would have taken off after it.
