Our dog has a bit of an issue with barking at things and people. I noticed today that when I left and came back he didn't bark at me opening the door. However if my husband is home and I come home after work he barks. It also happens vice versa and when we are both home and someone comes to the door.
Does this mean most of his barking is due to protecting?

I suspect he's barking when you or your husband is at home because his barking is being "rewarded" with your attention.

I also notice that my dog never barks when I approach the house because he knows it's me. I think he's cued in by the sound of my car door. Then he hears me open and close the mailbox.

Others can correct me if I'm mistaken, but I don't think the average dog is all that concerned with protecting his owner for the owner's benefit

I usually don't write comments. But I feel for you...we had problems with our dog also. He used to bark like crazy at everything, and our neighbours complained a lot because of that. Both my husband and I work a lot and had no time to take our Bud to dog training classes. We asked one friend who works in foster care (he is always surrounded by dogs) what we should do. He recommended one online dog behavior trainer. I love this trainer http://bit.ly/1WFtYpt It helped us a lot, and I strongly recommend it for you.

Lol I'd rather not pay 20 dollars to learn how to be the "alpha dog". I'm a human not a dog, and my dog needs a human leader not a savage dog leader.

Also rather not shell out hundreds of dollars to an online class when I could shell out 180 for my in person class.
