About 6 months ago I adopted a couple of 4 year old PomChi's from a rescue. They warned me the dogs had allergies. They thought they had flea and chicken allergies. They did fine with me for a couple of months and then my boy dog stole a bit of my child's sandwich (the kid knew better) and broke out really badly. After he didn't chill out on the scratching for two weeks I took him to the vet and he ended up with a steroid shot. He got better within a couple of days (I suspect he's partially immune to them, he didn't get crazy thirst or other side effects). He was fine, then a month or so later started throwing everything up. This time there were no obvious causes, the dogs follow me everywhere and only hang out with the kid when I am around so I know it wasn't kid food this time. After a turkey and rice diet from the vet his stomach calmed down and he started eating his usual food (which they have ate for a few months at this point with no problems). A month later he starts breaking out again. I end up switching to turkey and rice dog food (limited ingredient of course) and he seems to be fine for a few weeks, but he's breaking out again. I have been giving him benedryl in case it was seasonal, but it only seems to have a mild effect. The vet said itching face is a sign of food allergies and he has been itching his face. I swapped to food with quail, but it hasn't helped. I am running out of limited ingredient food options, at least from the local store. These have all been different brands as well. They were on fish for a while, then the turkey, then quail. I have read some people have made homemade dog food for highly allergic dogs. Is there anyone with experience? Maybe recipes that are healthy in the long term? If he doesn't calm down within a few days we will be back at the vet. Unfortunately vet insurance won't cover it if they realize it's pre-existing, so I am stuck with out of pocket expenses. I have also been giving him baths with PhytoVet C.
