We have an approx 5 y/o Shih Tzu/Bichon (Teddy) that has an issue where as he falls asleep he will many times open his eyes and then acts like he sees something on the bed and jerks his head forward at the non-existent thing he sees. This has been going on for a while but he doesnt have any other symptoms. No seizure-like activity or any other signs. He is overall healthy and eats good. This only happens as he is falling asleep and doesnt appear to be sleeping yet. It could happen multiple times as he is falling asleep.

Having a vet check their eyesight might be a good first step if the behaviour is worrying you. Aside from that, I'd just chalk it up to mixed signals in the transition from wakefullness to sleep - which is fairly normal and not really something to get too concerned about unless there are other issues.
