We've got about a 15 month old Bishon/Chitzu. We live in Central Florida, where plenty of storms come thru. The dog becomes very distressed well before we can hear anything brewing.

He does not act scared; he acts distressed internally, somehow. Panting, inconsolable, can't settle down. I have heard that sometimes a dog responds to the change in pressure and this actually causes some kind of medical condition that they are responding to.

Does anyone have an explanation for this? You see, if he were an old dog, it seems this distress is so severe that it could cause a medical crisis. I'm wondering what a remedy might be? Medicate him? With what?

I am not so sure it is causing medical issues. It sounds like he is afraid/stressed because of the storm. I have three Border Collies, 2 so not like thunder storms, and they too know it's coming before it gets here. The oldest acts just like your dog, he paces, pants heavily and get not rest. The other runs from window to window and barks at the thunder, but also pants heavily and is very agitated. If it is a problem I suggest talking to the Vet. My oldest Border Collie has been given medication to calm him, but I use it only when I think the storm will be a fairly long one. No sense in doping him up for several hours if the storm is just passing thur quickly. Hop this helps

You could use a thunder shirt or a dap or both. Both are natural much better than drugs with side effects.

I have heard of this and never thought there was any possiblitlty it could work. Do you have any person experience with it, sounds interesting.

No but if you search the threads you will find people that have used both and had positive results. I had a dog 15 years ago that used to hide in the bathtub during storms and ruined a few window blinds trying to escape the noise I wish I had had something to help her its very sad to watch them. If you want to simulate the thunder shirt sit and hold the dog around the body like the shirt does and see if that calms him. If it works you might want to get one.

Agreed with dawnben's suggestions. Only problem with the DAP is that it has a limited range, so you may have to confine him to a single room when a storm is approaching.
