Hello,

My 9 year-old female GSD/Golden Retriever mix, Alley, is digging down to our foundation in order to stay cool. We live in Florida, so the summers are quite hot and humid. We have a screened-in back porch with ceiling fans. She has access to the porch via a pet door. I'm trying to come up with an alternative place for her to dig. We have a large aluminum shed in the backyard. My wife has suggested that we build an open shelter next to the shed and start a hole for her underneath the shelter. I'm concerned that this will be a wasted effort, and she will go back to digging along the house again.

Regards,

Mark

If you try getting her to dig somewhere else you'd have to make that place more appealing and cooler then her original place. Try keeping the ground in the new place moist (no standing puddles though since you don't want to attract mosquitoes. Locate it in a place that stays shady and cool, and having it in a place that provides a decent view of the yard may also help.
