I would love some suggestions on how to help/or cure car sickness in dogs!
I am currently fostering a dog that gets sick any time she gets in the car. Basically she immediately starts smacking her lips once in the car and shortly after throws up. I have her strapped in with a seat belt, but it doesn't seem to help her at all. Any ideas on how to make her rides more comfortable?

We had the same problem with Samantha when we adopted her. She would start drooling as soon as she was in the car, and was throwing up within a block or two of home. When we traveled with her, per our Vet, we gave her small doses of Dramamine, which helped. We conditioned her, by taking her for short car trips, often, and gradually lengthened the distance. Sorry to have to tell you this, but it really took about three years of conditioning before she was comfortable in the car, or our motorhome. Now she willingly gets into the car, and often even enjoys it, but it was a slow process. Though she will occasionally get motion sick, it’s now a rare event and usually only if she is already not feeling well, or stressed about something, but it’s like a one in twenty five event now.

Thank you Laco! I might try Dramamine. Do you know what the dosage was per size?
I will be taking her to work with me on a daily basis which is a short 10 minute drive, so hopefully it doesn't take 3 years to get her use to the idea!

Samantha weighs right at 16 pounds, and I gave her a quarter of a tablet at a time. If I recall correctly, our Vet said I could give her up to a half, but I prefer to be as conservative as possible with medications, and a quarter pill worked for her. She would sleep, but when we stopped she was able to 'break through' and could be alert. Do the short car rides as often as you can, and hopefully she will quickly get the idea that car rides are ok.

I had a senior cat who got horribly carsick and had several severe issues the last year or two of his life had to go to the vet hospital half an hour away without traffic every other day or once or twice a week. He'd get sick within the first five minutes and then again after twenty. Any kind of traffic was a nightmare. He was diabetic so getting sick or fasting could literally be life threatening for him.
I had to give him injections of an expensive fast working antinausea prescribed medication, cerenia maybe. He'd stress drool and gag from any oral meds. Good news was after going every other day in the car for a month or two he stopped getting sick and didn't need any meds. Bad news, when he was healthier and didn't go in the car for a month or two, right back to getting sick.
The more you take them, the more used to it they get. My last dog supposedly got carsick before I got him. If I'd seen that on his shelter info, I might not have adopted him! But he maybe got sick once. I took him everywhere in the car all the time for hours from day one and he was fine.
