Hi!
I've got a 5 year old teeing walker coonhound that has been roaming the house freely for several years now and we are thinking of adding a puppy to the household. I am a big proponent of crate training, but don't know how that will work with the puppy in the crate and my older dog not crated (my TWCH was left for days in a crate by the a-holes that owned him before me, so he has been free-roaming since shortly after I rescued him). Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Not a problem to have the puppy in the crate and the existing dog out. That is what I did and it worked out fine for both. Plus you want the puppy some where safe when you are not home. Works great for feeding time also to keep the pup eating his own food.

While we're out, my older dog is loose (in the bedroom) and the younger one crated. It hasn't been a problem at all. I think they both sleep the entire time anyway.
