I got a chihuahua a couple weeks ago that is VERY skittish. She was kept in a wire crate 5ft off the ground with 5 other dogs and never handled or anything.

She's getting a little better but when you move towards her she shies away from you. Any ideas of how to build her confidence up and help her to not be so afraid of me?

Thanks

Toss treats at her from far away....feed her all her meals by hand (if she'll let you) kibble by kibble. Get as close as you can before she shys away and drop a treat and walk away...slowly build this up to petting.

Just Don't pressure her and don't use any corrections...
Agreed. I have worked in kennels since I was able to work and this is how I built trust between me and dogs that were boarding. It works wonders, I also would not stare at them when first starting but would sit there with my side to them....gently toss some treats and give some time between treats so the dog could sniff in my direction. Eventually they would come closer and I would hold a treat in a flat hand and they would start to eat from my hand as well as allow me to slip a lead over their head to get them out. Granted this was in a kennel not a big open room. I would start silently then very gently say "yes" or "good dog" whichever positive command you choose to use. GL :)
