My seven year old Maltese was diagnosed with a collapsed trachea. A year or so ago about one month ago he had a TERRIBLE episode where he completely collapsed and turned blue went into crises and had to be at the hospital to recover. Because he is a little fighter he made it through and has gotten much better. He is now on two different medications to help with inflammation and to open the airways. Also he is on hydrocodone as a cough suppressant as needed. He seems happy and so badly wants to healthy and be the dog he was and it's hard to see him get excited then realize he can't get like that because he starts to hack and cough. My question is has anyones dog ever had a full collapse like mine? I know many dogs get the collapsed trachea but I'm not sure how many have actual had a collapse and survived. I want to know if theirs is a life expectancy or if he is possibly uncomfortable or in pain. It doesn't seem that he is and the vets say he can still have a quality life but when we ask how long he has they kinda shrug and say like hopefully a few years, which is heartbreaking. Please share your stories, thank you in advance. Also please be careful if your dog is diagnosed. If we would have known this could've happened we would have done so many things differently for him. but vets always made it seem as though it wasn't serious. The problem is it's not very serious, until it is.
