Hi, folks.

I've been browsing for some time, but this is my first post and regards a small challenge I hope you can help me with.

My family has a number of small breeds, mainly Pekineses and Chihuahuas, which we just adore. Lately, one of the apple headed Chihuahuas has taken to eating whatever she can find in the garden, which results in many a bad belly and restless night.

We've cleaned the garden of everything we believe she has a taste for, followed her around to catch her in the act, and even took to walking her on a lead to restrict her illicit munchings. However, this makes garden play time feel more like parole and can impact our own busy times as she takes forever to finish her sniffy wanderings before returning to the house.

So my question is this ... can any one recommend a soft mouth guard or muzzle (how I hate that word) which she can wear just for her wanderings? One that allows her to open her mouth fully?

Its not to stop her barking and she doesn't bite, so please take this into consideration.

I've done some browsing but would much prefer a recommendation from another small breed owner. A web based suggestion would be preferred as I'll need to order online.

What you are looking for is a basket muzzle. All brands will allow the dog to pant, some will also allow the dog to take treats and drink water.

Hmm Dean & Tyler has one that will fit a Chihuahua but they are around $60. Except for Dean and Tyler, the muzzles are around $9

If you want your dog to wear the muzzle for longer period of time, I'd recommend a basket muzzle, since the dog can still pant and so isn't overheating so easily.
As far as i know both baskerville and Julius K-9 produce also for small breed.

Near as I could tell the Baskerville size 1 will only fit a larger Chihuahua that's around 10 lbs

perhaps OP can go in a shop for pet supplies to try a few out.
There are much more smaller dogs than big dogs and them needing a muzzle in certain situations is not that unusual. I'm sure they can help.
it's easier than ordering online when you don't know for sure what size and form you need yet.

Thanks for all the great responses guys. I never expected so much. Especially rain, who provided all the great links, which I dutifully followed.

I quite like many of them, mainly the Dean and Tyler, which do seem to offer what I need, If at something of an exorbitant price. But they offer limited information on sizes. However, not to fear. I'm still investigating and will contact them directly.

I must say, though, that I'm a little disappointed at all the suppliers of small dog incidentals as many of the reviews for the listed products claim wildly inaccurate sizing for smaller dogs, with muzzles contacting the eyes or not allowing the animal to drink. And this all worries me a bit

I would most definitely take her to a dog store to try the various models, but! I live south of the USA and well catered, dedicated dog stores are something of a limited factor in my area. Hence the on-line ordering.

As I mentioned, I'll contact Dean and Tyler to see what they offer in her snout range, 11 by 3.5cm, and I'll keep you updated.

You're welcome! Yeah it's the shape assorted shapes of the muzzles that's the problem. I know that the Dean and Tyler ones have different shapes on thier's, here's the link to their website, BUT near as I can tell a lot of the styles come in limited sizes and do not it toy dogs Muzzles for Dog - Basket Muzzles for Dogs | DTdogcollars
