Does anyone cart here? I want my rotti to pull cart. I would then like to get another one so we can do long distance...BUT my boy is only 11 months so I cant exactly start training. Until another month.
My plan is to build or buy a mini pony cart (what is used)
So far he knows voice commands walk/trot not to canter yet, I dont want to run after him right now. lol. He knows clicking means go...
I have not "halter broken him" any suggestions there.
And will soon brake him into the slats and pulling wheels.
Oh he has been broken into a harness.

here is a vid on youtube if your just hearing about this for the first time

This lady actually scares me

that vid made me cringe
It shouldn't. It's not cruel anyway what so ever and is growing
more and more popular. There is nothing wrong with weight pulling,
and more dogs need jobs! This is also a great way to excercise your
dog, I've even seen Caesar Millan use it on the Dog Whisperer to
get a dog to burn some excess energy.

So, to someone that is unfamiliar to the sport, I can see where it might
be taken as cruel. But really its not.:p

Good Luck with your Rott, travlingypsy! :D

Was it the lady? I cringe when I hear her...lol. She is also to heavy for the dog or hes just to old but he is having way to much trouble walking her around. Yes they can pull 500+ pounds in all those compatitions...

Any dog can learn it! You just have to start from ground up and get them use to things hanging off their side, and voice commands like walk, trot, canter (lol) Also you have to teach them about the halter around their face and when you pull one way it mean that way "fallow your nose" Its almost like training horses. But you have to make sure they dont chase cats,bikes,cars...ect.

Maybe I will use this post and show you guys me and dukes process. Right now hes at the stage where he need to learn to pull weels, im skipping the part where he gets desensitezed to the slats :p ...he should be fine. Then watch he starts like bucking, rearing, wheening.

With my prev dog (Sibe/Malamute) I did driving :) He had a custom made dog sulky. Was a lot of fun! I still have the sulky, and really need to train my malamute or one of my leo/newfy mixes to it! My friend has one she's training her Rotti to.

As far as your plan to buy a mini/pony cart, a two wheel won't work. A four wheel could... but you're better off buying one of the many dog carts that are made.
