My dog has an ear infection AND a slightly infected abrasion behind the ear where she's been scratching. So, after a visit to the vet, she's on oral antibiotics AND topical (in ear) liquid antibiotics AND has to wear the cone of shame. She doesn't have any stitches or anything like that that needs to be protected from her biting at it... She just needs to be protected from scratching at her ear. As such, it seems to me that her cone goes way further out than is necessary, and I can't imagine that trimming 4 or 5 inches off of it would give her any better access to scratching her ear. Has anyone done this? It would really make life easier for her. Thanks!

I'd not trim it until it's morning, the pet shop or vet is open, and you are around to keep a close eye on her. That way if you've trimmed to much you can go and buy a new one.

we commonly trim down e-collars if needed, but usually there is a smaller size one can acquire which makes the whole trimming exercise unnecessary. If you need to trim it down, you can always tape over the cut edges if worried about a sharp edge created.
