Hello,

Our Boston (Duke - 8 yrs) has been experiencing consistent, 2-3 day episodes, every 10-12 days, for 18 months straight. We have spent $6k on this issue alone and simply cannot afford to keep paying vet bills.

As a baby he was diagnosed with epilepsy and had about 3 grand mal seizures per year until he was 6, when they started clustering. He was then put on 3ml/day of potassium bromide and hasn't had one since.

About 6 months after being put on the potassium bromide he started to go through these 2-3 day episodes. The symptoms include: fever (103-106), trembling, lethargy, coughing, muscle weakness (no pain), drooling (no nausea), and loss of appetite.

I cannot stress enough to how scheduled and consistent the episodes are.

2-3 day episode
10-12 days fine
2-3 day episode
10-12 days fine

It is like clockwork, for 18 straight months. His episodes are so bad that it looks like he's dying. and then for 10-12 days he is totally normal and happy. Also, there is no increase or decrease in the severity of the symptoms, and he gets all of them, every time.

We have done 5 full blood panels and have ruled out infectious diseases, tick borne, bacterial meningitis, lyme disease, pneumonia, Adisson's disease, and basically anything environmental.

We did one abdominal and one chest x-ray, which both showed nothing.

The vet now wants to look towards insulinoma (pancreatic cancer) or another tumor, but this would require an ultrasound ($400), and even then we cannot afford surgery.

I apologize for the long winded post, any any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Sounds like a neurologic problem, and probably not going to be able to get the bottom of it without the help of a neurologist and an MRI (not a cheap test!).

There are lots of other seizure drugs in case this has anything to do with the bromide (never seen these sorts of reactions to bromide, though)... is he on anything aside from bromide? Can try phenobarb, zonisamide, keppra etc.
