Hi everyone. I just found this very odd looking blackish growth on my dogs skin today while petting her. The dogs were due for a vet appt. anyways so I am taking her in on Thursday. Im pretty concerned about what I found and was looking for some input. At least so I know what I can do now, or what to expect at the vet.

I attached a picture of what it looks like.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!!

Ok so went to the vet and the vet said it looks like melanoma. BUT apparently when it grows in areas that have hair, they are usually nothing meaning not cancer, but he said you never know. He recommended having it removed and then sent off to be biopsied.

So my concerns are that she just turned 11 and I am not crazy about her being knocked out plus we were quoted about $650. I am all about the natural approach but I seem to not really have any more answers than I did before. Isnt there some way for a vet to numb the area and take a sample that way to be sent off? I really dont want her knocked out unless she has to.

When something on the skin is biopsied, they normally take more than just the growth - they take some tissue surrounding it to make sure they get the whole thing. They may be suggesting putting her under due to the fact that she may need stitches after the growth is removed. It might be difficult to put in stitches with the risk of your pup moving around because she is concerned about what is going on. Maybe you could ask for a mild sedative instead of putting her totally under. The sedative should make her relax and a bit sleepy, and it might not be as risky as anesthesia. I hope everything goes well with her.
