I pulled a 13 yr old Australian Cattle Dog out of a high kill shelter last Monday. I've been to the vet several times since then and found out that he has a lot of medical problems. He has hip dysplasia, cataracts, deafness, dermatomyositis (sp?), portosystemic shunt, progressive retinal atrophy and retinal dysplasia. The vet has put him on Rimadyl, Dasuquin (sp?), I'm using a rear lifting dog harness to take him outside, I bought him a plush memory sleeper and he has some plush foam steps to get up to my bed. The vet has given him Ocu-GLO (sp?) Vision Supplement. She has put him on a double dose of it daily. I was told nothing can be done for the dermatomyositis. He is too old to have the portosystemic shunt surgically dealt with, and he has lived with it all his life, so there is nothing they can do. I've been told nothing can be done for the retinal dysplasia either. Is there anything else I can do for Eden? He was never castrated, but the vet has wrote the shelter a letter and told them that he is too old to be castrated and they have given me permission to keep him intact.
