There is certainly value to crate training but it does not need to be 100% either/or. Pax was crate trained as a pup but now sleeps in my bed...but I can toss him back in his crate for a night if I need to or if he is at the pet sitter.
Pax has isolation anxiety and HATES being alone. He did not at all like being in his crate. Even though he was in my room, he could not see me up in my bed. Once I put his crate up where he could see me he slept like a rock without a peep...now his crate is down on the floor but it was a bit of a transition to get him comfortable.
