Several weeks ago my dog (6mo old Redbone) ate some scat while we were out walking. I am not sure whether it was raccoon or porcupine or fox. About a week or so later, we coincidentally gave him a new wet food, and he got sick in the middle of the night, projectile vomiting. He really scared me that night as he was frantically trying to gobble up anything he could get his mouth on and I didn't know what was going on. I took him to the emergency vet and they did x-rays and bloodwork. The only thing wrong with his bloodwork was slightly high white cells which they said weren't indicative of an infection because the high counts were lymphocytes and monocytes, and not neutrophils. She said if it was an infection, the neutrophils would be elevated, too. They gave him a subcutaneous fluid injection (he looked like a hunchback), and sent him home. I don't know whether he was sick from the food or not.
A few days later I noticed that he had explosive diarrhea. He had two episodes where he purged liquidy, mucousy, mixed with tiny pinpoints of blood. I collected the stool and brought him back to the vets.
She examined him and said there was no signs of a blockage - no bloating or tenderness or unevenness in his belly. His color was good. But she gave him five days of antibiotics just in case and sent his stool off for a smear.
The next day they called and said he had hookworm and we went over to retrieve a wormer that he has to take once every two weeks for two months.
After a couple days on the antibiotics, his stools had firmed back up. We gave him the wormer and he went back to pudding poops. Then a few days later he firmed up slightly again and though his poops were nice and solid, they at least had shape until they hit the ground.
That was two weeks ago and now he's back to diarrhea every time and this morning he woke me up at 3:30am to go out and do two rounds of diarrhea.
He's been on a bland diet (chicken and rice) for three weeks now and his poops are not firming up.
What do I do now? I have a call into the vet for guidance/advice, but I am getting worried that something is really wrong.
I don't think he's necessarily lethargic acting, but he doesn't seem to be his normal continuously hyper self that just goes all day long. He has period of good, bright, alert activity, and then he naps. I'm beginning to see every nap or period of inactivity as something sinister.
Any advice?
