Several weeks ago my dog (6mo old Redbone) ate some scat while we were out walking. I am not sure whether it was raccoon or porcupine or fox. About a week or so later, we coincidentally gave him a new wet food, and he got sick in the middle of the night, projectile vomiting. He really scared me that night as he was frantically trying to gobble up anything he could get his mouth on and I didn't know what was going on. I took him to the emergency vet and they did x-rays and bloodwork. The only thing wrong with his bloodwork was slightly high white cells which they said weren't indicative of an infection because the high counts were lymphocytes and monocytes, and not neutrophils. She said if it was an infection, the neutrophils would be elevated, too. They gave him a subcutaneous fluid injection (he looked like a hunchback), and sent him home. I don't know whether he was sick from the food or not.

A few days later I noticed that he had explosive diarrhea. He had two episodes where he purged liquidy, mucousy, mixed with tiny pinpoints of blood. I collected the stool and brought him back to the vets.

She examined him and said there was no signs of a blockage - no bloating or tenderness or unevenness in his belly. His color was good. But she gave him five days of antibiotics just in case and sent his stool off for a smear.

The next day they called and said he had hookworm and we went over to retrieve a wormer that he has to take once every two weeks for two months.

After a couple days on the antibiotics, his stools had firmed back up. We gave him the wormer and he went back to pudding poops. Then a few days later he firmed up slightly again and though his poops were nice and solid, they at least had shape until they hit the ground.

That was two weeks ago and now he's back to diarrhea every time and this morning he woke me up at 3:30am to go out and do two rounds of diarrhea.

He's been on a bland diet (chicken and rice) for three weeks now and his poops are not firming up.

What do I do now? I have a call into the vet for guidance/advice, but I am getting worried that something is really wrong.

I don't think he's necessarily lethargic acting, but he doesn't seem to be his normal continuously hyper self that just goes all day long. He has period of good, bright, alert activity, and then he naps. I'm beginning to see every nap or period of inactivity as something sinister.

Any advice?

I'd take him back to the vet, and on the off chance that he's now intolerant of either rice or chicken switch him to cooked lean ground beef, and sweet potato.

A few years back my boy suffered from a bout of colitis, and the vet prescribed a chicken based sensitive stomach prescription canned food. He stopped acting sick but his stool remained soft. I then switched him to chicken and rice, his stool kept being soft. I began to suspect the chicken so I switched him to the beef and sweet potato, within a couple days his stool improved. Now he does not get chicken and his stool has been great, when he does get chicken he'll have at least one soft bowel movement.

So we went back to the vet and she has put him on Metronidazole for two weeks and said to continue the wormer every two weeks for six more weeks. He had his second dose of Metronidazole on Friday and his poop was firmer than it has been for a couple of weeks. We wormed him late Friday night and this morning's poop was like pudding. Tonight's poop had some firmer parts in it which, again, is a slight improvement. He has a lot of energy and seems to be gobbling down his new prescription E/N canned food, too (as long as I feed him with a spoon). Hoping that this clears up soon because we've had to postpone having him fixed twice now.

Anything else I can try at home to firm him up? If he even gets a whiff of pumpkin in his food he refuses to eat it. I read somewhere that Immodium might help but am not sure if that's recommended.

Lastly, he does seem a lot brighter and more active since he went back on the antibiotic. What could this mean? His poop only showed positive for hookworm and nothing else that we know of. Are there other things he could have in his gut that are bacterial and causing this?

Glad to hear that he is improving. Hookworms can really irritate the intestinal wall. Probiotics can really help. I keep endosorb tablets in the house all the time for diarrhea. Dogs being dogs will eat things in the yard (rabbit, deer poop, etc.)

Have you tried giving him a bit of digestive supplement like Pro-Max? My dog had really bad diarrhoea but nothing as bad as yours. She ate stuff off the street and ate the grass with bug poison. She woke me up 3-4 am in the morning to go out and poop on consecutive nights. It was really bad, she was exploding with poop everywhere with blood and multiple times. I took her to the vet and they prescribed a tube of pro-max and some prescription canned food. These digestive paste really do help.
