Hi there,

From my heart, I please ask for anyone's help. My German Shepherd Male is 5 years old, when he was 4 (over a year ago), he was diagnosed with Anal Furunculosis and put on a high dose of Atopica. The Vet said his condition was mild, and that the Atopica would keep it manageable. We take him to the vet every 6 weeks for a check-up, and he has been fine so far.

Recently though, I have been reading about the increased rate of cancer in dogs who take Atopica due to the way it works. Furthermore, he now has growth/stye on his eye and if it grows any bigger he will need to have it surgically removed by knocking him out. The Vet said it was likely caused by the Atopica. I know everyone loves their dogs dearly, but this boy has genuinely saved my life and given me a reason to live when I had none at all. I can't bear the prospect of anything happening to him at this age, I will do anything, no matter the cost, to keep him in good health.

So in short, does anyone have any alternatives, possibly natural, that might help the Anal Furunculosis so he might be able to be slowly taken off the Atopica? I would really appreciate any input, I am worried sick at the moment and will go to no end to ensure his best health. He's in perfect health outside of his condition.

Thank you very much.

anal fistulas are a difficult condition to control well but cyclosporine is a relatively miraculous drug for keeping G shepherds with this problem more comfortable and sometimes even free of symptoms.... but like any chemo drug (and this is indeed a chemo drug), it has potential side effects. You have to, as with any drug, chose the lesser of two evils. I think the choice between having uncontrolled anal fistulas and MAYBE having some complications with cyclosporine is not all that difficult. I have not heard of anything else, short of multiple surgeries, that helps this condition (and surgery often fails, too).
