Hello,

My akita inu male is 10 months old and weights 28 kg. The vet says his weight is normal but for some reason I feel he's a bit underweight. Any opinions?

A little under weight is better for over all health than over weight. If the vet thinks its fine I would listen.
Do You Know What to Feed Your Large or Giant Breed Puppy?
When a puppy's body gets too big, too fast and gains a lot of weight, it puts stress on the developing skeleton. Rapid bone growth can result in structural defects of the bones, which makes the skeleton even less able to bear the increasing body weight.

If you can easily feel the puppy's ribs with any real definition, than he's too slim. If not, he is good. {& yes I know the standard is see the ribs, that's for an adult not a still growing dog}

28kgs is 61.6lbs give or take. Akitas are like humans, they can fall short of the expectations [if the parents were smaller, he'd be smaller]. I know a 75lb pup at 9 months would be considered overweight as per the nihonken forums I frequent [which would be a suggestion to join] so 61lbs @ 10 months is probably okay.

Not only that but it does typically take them the full 2 years to reach their max weight - though not overly big, they are indeed slow growing dogs.

I have a 10 month old female Japenese akita and i live in Victoria, Australia. Were i live there aren't many experienced vets that specialise in akitas. My problem is that she ways 20.4 kg andwhen we tookher to the vet yesterday she had lost 300 g. I have had many dogs, and the vet has said she is underweight. Supposedly akitas are not fussy eaters but she only eats chicken, and occasionally some kibble. Our akita is also not very active and we have problems trying to entertain her. We have tried shaky toys and kong toys but she hasnt shown bvery much interest. Does anyone have any ideas on how to tell if my akita is underweight, and any food recommendations? How do you guys entertain your akita's??

Is she getting a complete diet? Should be 90% complete and balanced and only 10% treats. Are you raw feeding to the barf or prey model or is the chicken as treats?

I would change kibble and see how you go, zignature kangaroo is smelly and seems to go well with my picky pup. I change protein every month or so.
