So we are starting agility in 4 weeks. I know we need to strengthen the recall a bit. It was fantastic but he has recently discovered that chasing cats is a lot more fun than coming when called... :eyeroll:

He can sit and wait for a que/treat extremely well along with some basic tricks.

He is well socialised, not reactive, confident little yorkie.

what should we work on before our first (beginners) class?

PS. I will be running with him because my mum has a bad leg.

Recall is the #1 right now that I would really focus on. Also if you have any focus/ watch command, you'll probably need that in a new environment. Also if you have a touch command, those are really nice to have ahead of time.

I agree with recall! If you have recall, everything else will be pretty easy. In addition to recall, will he stay with you and work with you off leash? My dog has a stellar recall through all sorts of distractions, but once he gets to me he's like "Ok, behavior done, I'm gonna go run over here now". lol So practice moving with you off leash. Doesn't have to be an obedience heel, but having the dog move with you and follow you on both the right and left sides is important.

Targeting/touch is a good one too.

He is a bit of a velcro dog, his recall used to be soo good even without intensive training because he wasnt confident enough to leave our side. Now his confidence has increased he has started doing that a bit. A little bit bitter sweet
