G'Day,

I have researched recipes till I am blue. I finally settled on my own concoction that I think is pretty good for my Beagle puppy and would love a second, or more, opinion.

First, a little background info.
Male Beagle
born around July 4th of 2012
Came with a little puppy chow (he didn't like it even wet)
Bought Eukanuba(?) Puppy mix (a little better if wet)
Given some Science Diet puppy from vet (same if wet but did not finish the bag)
First vet visit 3.75 lbs
second 6.25
third 10.5 (2 days ago)
Looking down on standing dog can almost see last rib or 3 and has a little waist unless he just ate and tummy is a bit rounded. Stool is solid and dark and goes away fast but not large. Very active and always wants to play. Potty trained easily and quickly, seemingly on his own.

First attempt at cooking dogfood:
Memory is fuzzy now days but
Sweet potato's (instead of rice)
10 lbs of hamburger
couple of bags of frozen mixed veggies
12 whole eggs run through a blender (shells and all for calcium)
cooked, browned, mashed together and run through a pressure caner so I could just shelve it.

Didn't think it was a good recipe so before he could even eat it all I put a new batch together.

10 lbs of chicken thighs/quarters with bones (pressure cooked for 2 1/2 hours and then mashed)
6 to 8 cups cooked rice
6 lbs (1 lbs bags) mixed veggies. Broccoli, Cauliflower, carrots, peas
2 cups oats
blender it, mix it, jar it up and froze part of it this time. Making another batch tonight that I will pressure can in quart jars after cooking and mixing together using the broth to fill the jars.

I am thinking that I should be adding some type of supplement but I also don't believe all the commercial supplement makers as to what is best for a dog to get. They may know more than me but they are more out for profit than the good of my dog. I also think my dog eats better than most of the people that I know. I don't eat junk processed foods so I doubt he eats as well as me but I am trying.

I hope I gave enough information to get good opinions and I am not trying to get a "how to" explanation since I have found those on this and many other forums, I like this one and lurk here the most. Anything I should add to make more balanced? I am thinking and looking for fish oil to add Omega 3's but I hear it might add a lot of salt.

Thanks in advance for any opinions that I receive.

Not sure about advice, but I may steal the recipes! I just switched my dog to raw and my vet recommended I increase her cooked food slightly.

Also, very impressed you pressure-can things. This suburban-bred girl who mostly lives on things out of a box didn't even know you could do that at home :) And yes, my dog eats better than I do - although I'm working on it :)

can't commemt on the balance of the diet itself but you could up the omega 3 by using bug/greens fed chicken eggs and grass fed beef. flaxseed and kiwi are a few good plant sourced. sardines and herring are two great fish sources. the bioavaiablity of supplements is suspect and varied. google omega 3 dietary sources and you will see a ton of whole foods you can use instead of supplments.

Honestly, talk to a professional pet nutritionist - they are best suited to analyzing the diet.

Offhand, the lack of offal in your recipe greatly concerns me - offal is an important source of enzymes, hormones, trace minerals and fat soluble vitamins. Of course, they are best served raw to prevent the loss of nutrients due to heat (Taurine, I'm looking at you) so I'm not too certain how you could attain this with your canning.
