Its not an immediate process. As is any relationship, your bond with your dog will have to be based on trust. That takes time, there are no short cuts. Spending time with your adopted companion, playing with him, feeding him regularly, and just generally taking care of his needs are all trust building components. You won't know exactly when it happens, but suddenly one day, you will realize the two of you are closely bonded to one another. Its a great reward for both of you.
It was fun for us to try to figure out which doggie games our rescue really likes: tug? fetch? running? Also, making sure that the dog has its own area in the rooms where you spend a lot of time is important so that you can both be comfortable and together.
