okay so this saterday we adopted a puppy but they are holding her till she gets spayed, shes a GSD, 5 months old. her last owners had kids she nipped and wasnt played with because of the kids. we needed a dog/puppy for our 10 month old Gsd/lab cross male, after losing our 15 year old American eskimo last month. so this thursday/friday we are picking her up. we want things to go well with him accepting her we belive he will take to her, hes very lonely, on 10 acres.

we are going to keep her in our big backyard for a few weeks letting her out when we are out so she understands this is home. i was wondering (its been 7 months sense last time we had to keep a puppy in the backyard) how much to feed her, she will be home 6 hours by herself. im planing on waking up early to play with her and feed her, adn after school spending some time before i work with my horses and after, after supper, and before bed. she will be outside. we have toys for her, considering that my other 'puppy' still loves to play with toys. she will have shelter and water with food twice a day.

my other dog knows how to get under the fence from when he was locked up... thats my only consern. i dont want to lock her up for 6 hours and we live in the country. where when shes a little older can do whatever on our property. i was going to introduce them through the fence, hes about 90ish pounds and shes 40ish and can handle herself with adult pitbulls, but they knew she was a pup, but hes only 10 months will he know not to play to rough? he was with out other dog for 6 months and before that with two larger dogs, when he was a pup.

what do you guys think?

also does anyone show horses and take their dogs with? and how do you teach them to behave so well at shows? i would love to take her to shows.

A lot of people don't seem to like outdoor dogs. Personally we have 3, strictly outside only dogs. All german shepherds, and all three we bought as puppies. We don't have a fenced area for them ( we have many fenced areas for our terriers, but the shepherds job (other then cattle) is to keep the yard site free of coyotes, raccoons, and other pests. We live on 640 acres and our yard site is 25 acres. We spend a lot of time outside with them doing chores ( 10horses, 5 cows, and 15 dogs) and with farm chores we are generally out for about 6-10hrs on the long days.

So while raising the shepherds they had tons of people interaction/playing. As long as your outside pup gets plenty of training/attention and has a warm and dry area to go to I don't see any problem. And make sure the fence is secure. Oh and the usual food and water too ;)

ive only had outside dogs a little american eskimo that lived 13 years outside with us lived to be 15 years old. my husky/collie/wolf that was 5 monthsish lived outside he was fine and my now 10 month old german shepard/lab, he was outside at 2 months and they all turned out fine but we had to put down my Husky cross, at a year and 5 months, because he was becoming paralyzed in the back, and his body attakced each other.

she will have food 3 times a day, water, shelter, and a fenced in area she will be in for a while till she gets use to her new home. then she will only be in when we are away and at night, we are gone about 6 hours a day, i have 3 horses, and 5 cats, and im hoping that she can come with to horse shows this summer.

I think the difference here is that (it sounds like) this member is in the country/on a farm, not in the city. There's a big diff (from my understanding) between a farm dog and a city dog. I would never let my 10 lb. single-coat chi be an outdoor dog in my metro area, but that's not what we're talking about here. :D

Scooby, I think if you have a good set up for her to get out of the weather when it's bad, and you are giving her plenty of attention and stimulation (sounds like you will be), she'll be fine.

As far as the dog-dog intro, I'd just be careful. Maybe intro them on-leash in a neutral area first if you can. They probably should have met first (prior to the adoption), but I'm sure with so much space they'll get along.

Feed according to the directions on the bag of food. ;)

yes i live in the country and about a little over a mile to other houses. we found a dog that went missing and hes at our house in the backyard and he barks at my dog and my dog lays down. the other dog started it all and my dog just layed down. and he has not tryed to get in the backyard so i belive it should be fine when she comes home hopefully next week.

Exactly! I don't mention it much because people do seem to freak out about outside dogs, but my dogs are 90% outside dogs. However, as you state I live on 5 acres. My closest neighbor is about a mile away and we're surround by miles and miles of national forest. Result = No people to cause problems. My dogs come in and out as they please. When we leave the house they are locked outside (they do fine inside, but they prefer to be out). As long as they have food water and a dry place they're okay. I have a GSD and a border collie. They love being outside!

I also have horses ScoobyDoo, but I don't do shows. I trail ride and do arena work.

I've never been to a horse show. When you are showing where would you be expecting them to stay? In the vehicle, trailer? Being attended by someone on the side lines?

I would just make sure your dog has solid basic obedience. Sit, stay, lay down, recall, on and off leash manners. Make sure she has good manners by socializing her well from a young age. You want to make sure that if she gets loose from you she doesn't take off and accidentally spook someone's horse causing an accident where the dog or someone gets hurt. I took my GSD with me everywhere I could. To a friends house, on town errands (as long as it wasn't too hot in the vehicle or too long by herself). Just where ever I could! Expose to her to anything and everything you can! Crowds, noises. Maybe take her too a few horse shows that you aren't showing in. That way, you can be in that type of environment but be totally focused on working with her and not have to worry about showing or your horses. Get her accustomed to it. Since you own horses, I'm sure you will make sure she has respect for them, but isn't scared of them. I also work with my dogs from horseback, just in case. And it has come in handy! I can direct my dogs off the road and have them 'stay' if a car is passing. (Not sure how much trail stuff you do). I'm not a professional, but this is what I did and I am comfortable taking my GSD and BC anywhere.:) She does fine with strange dogs (even if they are aggressive) and she's focused in busy environments. GSD's are great dogs! Congratulations! Please post pictures!:D

I just want to make sure that the comment of "will have food and water twice a day" meant food twice a day but water at all times ;) If not you should definitely provide water at all times :)
