Last year I was informed by my vet that my 3 year old Molly was born with loose patellas, a birth defect my vet thinks. There is a possibility that she might need surgery in the future but I am wondering if by managing her weight, and making a tramp for her along with giving her vitamins and supplements we can put off a surgery.

I was wondering if there any vitamins and supplements that are not only great for joints but also for other things.

Thanks in advance

My boy was diagnosed with luxating patella around 2 years ago when he was around 1 1/2 years old. So far he's not gotten any worse and has only had one episode where his knee came completely out and didn't go right back in.

The joint supplement I used was Cytel-M for awhile and it did seem to help with the worse of the soreness, but I haven't used it in awhile and have not seen him getting any worse. This is a link to it if you want to read reviews and such Amazon.com : Advanced Cetyl M Joint Action Formula for Dogs - 120 tablets : Pet Bone And Joint Supplements : Pet Supplies If he ever seems to be getting sore and lame again I'll put him back on it.

I never used any special vitamins for him unless I had to homecook and wanted to make sure it was nutritionally complete. The one I use for that is Nupro
I don't feel the need to use a vitamin supplement since I feed my dog a high quality food, and rotate between formulas, I also use a variety of different brands of canned food as a topper.

I try to keep him lean as any extra weight will put a strain on his knees and I encourage him to do activities that will strengthen his leg muscles and help hold the knees in place. We do short bouts of fetch and chase throughout the day, we play tug o war, and go for long walks. I try to limit jumping on and off the couch (he has steps) and I also have a ramp for him to use to get on and off my bed.

I recently started my crew on nupro joint and immunity. Initially got it for my seniors but am also giving to my youngest two as they are constantly in physically taxing sports classes. So far so good. Hasn't been long enough yet to see any improvment, but really goal was to support and maintain my seniors joint health as they age.

There is no way any sort of supplement such as vitamins or some other nutraceutical is going to 'fix' a patellar laxation. But as someone else noted, not all dogs that have patellar laxation need to have anything done about it... in fact, most do not. Things to avoid: obesity, super strenuous and damaging activity (no long distance training, agility or jumping) and, of course, unnecessary surgery (in other words, if your pet does not limp all the time it is unlikely it will need surgery at any time, unless injury or severe deterioration of the joint.

I used the supplement to help keep the joint lubricated, and hopefully help with any pain he may have been in, as it was the vet wanted me to put him on Science Diet Adult Healthy Mobility Small Bites Dry Dog Food. I did try it but it didn't seem to help Zody and actually caused him to gain a bit of weight.
