the alert dog was probably the first dog living with humans. 
Alert barking is a totally normal for a dog in general though. he just want's to tell you that there's someone coming in. just send him to his place and give him the feeling that everything is fine... it will become less with the dog becoming more experienced and settled, but it will probably not go away completely.
