I have a 4 year old Pomeranian who I still cannot get house trained! I've had her since she was a puppy, we first started her on training pads and have long since moved away from it because I hear that's much harder to house train. We have now moved into a new home and I can't seem to get her to tell us she needs to go potty.
We have her crated at night while sleeping, let her out in the morning to do her business, eat, and play, then crate her again during our 8 working hours then go for a walk around the block when we get home, she'll urinate 3-4 times while out. From 5pm until about 9pm she will still unexpectedly pee on the carpet (always on the carpet!) at least once or twice. Sometimes she'll surprise us and not go at all. But this is a problem I cannot seem to figure out why she can't hold it only a few hours after being let out.

Was the rug yours or was it original to the home? Even my very well mannered dog who came to me housebroken (adopted at 3) has urinated on carpets that previous cats/dogs peed on. If you haven't already rent a rug doctor. Do a dual treatment. Spray the rug down with Nature's Miracle. Then Rug Doctor with the special pet odor remover, then nature's miracle. It will put the rug out of commission for at least a day but may solve your problem.

I think the carpet has had previous accidents. I have a carpet shampooer that I use each time she has an accident so it is getting cleaned up. Our goal is to replace the carpet with a hard surface but my concern is she'll choose another place in the house to urinate.

She may or may not find another place. In most cases where it's from previous animals it's resolved with a good cleaning/rug swap.

Have you done the whole rug or just spot cleaned where she pees? My concern is not her pee but the pee of previous animals. At this point it may be in the padding or even on the sub flooring.

I have an 8 year old Pom that refuses to be potty trained. I've done everything I can. She gets super excited to go outside and pee and poop, but she goes whenever she has the urge to go. She has no interest in holding herself until we go out. And I made the mistake of yelling at her inside when she did it, so now she's just learned to be sneaky about it. I'll not be paying attention to her and all of a sudden she'll disappear and have gone upstairs to poop.

I've tried crating. I've tried treats. I've tried tethering her to me with a leash so she can never be out of my sight. I've used Nature's Miracle to clean her typical pee areas. I've done everything I can and she refuses to be housebroken.

It's sad to say, but I've gotten to the point where I've just accepted that this is the case. I mitigate for the issues when I can, but I've essentially given up on trying.

^Well that is depressing. I started off with pads and when I took them away, my puppy started going everywhere again. So now the pads are back - even though we are going out 12 times a day as well.

How old is the puppy? If it's under 6 months the change has to be gradual. Also, I've heard pad trainers have far more success when they bring a piddled pad outside. Dogs don't simply learn to void outside, they need to know--really know--that that's what they are supposed to do. The pads are a bright smelly signal that that's where they go potty....outside doesn't have that, you may need to help it along.

He is 17 weeks. He goes fine outside (usually) but he won't hold it until we go out and won't ask for the door either. And yes he gets a treat every time he goes outside.
