I have a 1 yr old Boxer who is scared of everything he shouldnt be! He hides behind me if hes scared! Its really getting annoying we thought "oh hes just a puppy he will grow out of it" well it seems to be getting worse. Most dogs growl or bark when someone comes over they dont know...not my dog he does the "Boxer Wiggle" which is good but what if someone was breakin in to my house?? Can i trust that he will protect me??? please give me some insight

I love boxers and think they typically have a good disposition, especially with people. I guess I am confused...he is scared of what exactly? Other dogs? Children? Cars? He is scared of everything but then enjoys company?

I don't think you should ever rely on a dog to defend your home. Its a scary situation for them just as it is for you. I don't see a dog being friendly to anybody and then turning and being an attack dog if someone breaks into your home. I can see the dog possibly barking in defense if you are not present and someone breaks in, or if you are sleeping and he hears noise in the livingroom etc.

Start making the association between scary things and good things... if he likes food, make it apear everytime the scary thing does.

As far as breaking in, no your dog shouldn't/wouldn't protect you. I have dogs as a deterant (easier to break into a house without dogs) but I don't for a second expect them to protect the house. In fact if your dog bites an intruder, depending on where you live, the dog can be siezed and euthanized...or the burglar can sue you.

and also what pawz said...what are the specific triggers?

If he hears a noise he is unsure about he tucks his tail and hids..example last night i was covering my mouthing making a "darth vadar" noise....kinda...and his ears pinned back...tucked his tail and ran to my husband...he loves kids....people...not afraid of cars really...but what led me to seek out help was last week he was riding shotgun as usual and when we drove by a house that some kids were jumping on a trampoline...he then pinned his ears back and jumped in my floorboard pressing on the excelerator! It was an extremely scary experience for me...we were in my husbands Diesel truck which is loud and powerful....it could had been tragic but i got it under control...I dont rely on my dog to protect the house its just the piece of mind that "what if"...When i was younger we had a Boxer and he was the best dog EVER! He loved people as well but one time the meter reader jumped the back fence not knowing our dog was in the yard and he bit him....not major but knew to protect me and my sisters...the meter reader tried to get us to put our dog down but the vet refused stating he was doing what he knew best....protect....Sorry for the long story its just hard to explain....oh and another thing...he doesnt know when another dog i playing to rough...one of our friends has a husky pup who has a temper....last weekend they were "playing" and i noticed my dog had a little blood on him....I just dont know what to do please help

Well this is something he has to learn on his own. Dogs can draw blood even with playing, and I notice my parents boxers bleed a lot on their lips after playtime, no biggy.

As for protecting when your house, you won't know if your dog will do it until it happens to be honest.

The frightened issue I agree with Crio use treats to make it positive or a calming voice when he gets upset. Kids jumping on a trampoline I can understand would be weird and scary to a dog who has never seen it, they are high up and bouncing real high, kinda scares me! haha jk

This is exactly the reason you don't want your dog to be "protective"

the meter reader was not dangerous...was not a threat. How did the dog protect you from som'thing that wasn't a threat to begin with?

Thats my point. You want a dog that is friendly with everyone, including the mailman and meter people. Barking is fine, but biting is bad news. YOur fortunate that that dog wasn't seized and destroyed by the city. Im surprised thats not what happend

Dogs are not moral or charater readers. They can just as easily "protect" you from a bad guy as a strange child that wanders into you yard.

This is why socialization with many types or people in many enviroments is important, so that a dog doesn't become a liability

Not really directed at you, just a point I think need to be out there.

As far as playing to rough, try to find other dogs that are similar in intesity as him, I know boxers play too rough for many other breeds.
