Teaching a puppy to play, with a problematic pal...

I have 2 Australian Kelpies, Patch and Jayna. Paddy (Patch) is 10 years old and Jayna is nearly 1 year old. I have been trying to teach Jayna to play with things, but Patch is so toy-oriented that he intercepts the toys to play with himself and if we put him somewhere else he will howl and carry on.

Besides his toy-theiving, Jayna doesn't seem to understand the concept of playing with humans. Her and Paddy rough house, but she won't with me, she just rolls over submissivle.y And if I do have her alone with a toy, I can throw it and she will chase it but stop when she gets to it, or else not even notice I threw it. If I throw it at her, like trying to get it to land in front of her, she thinks I am trying to hit her and will run off.

How can I get her to play?

Have you tried fur tug toys? Is she food motivated? Maybe you can use treats for play? Treat dispensing toys? Puzzle toys? Have you played 'find it'?

I would say Paddy needs to be put in another room with a toy while you teach Janya, too.

Maybe start teaching 'take' with items and once that gets going you may have better luck with everything else.
