Socializing young puppy

Ive been doing a lot of puppy research to prepare myself for possibly getting my first puppy on my own this summer. A big question I have: I've read that before a puppy is finished with all their shots, you should take your puppy around friends/families vaccinated dogs. Well, the only dogs I know are my parents dogs, who don't get vaccinated anymore (they got shots for the first 3-4 years of their lives and then my parents stopped taking them to the vet. They're 5 and 6 now.) and my aunt and uncles dog, who has fleas and doesn't get any vet care. They don't believe in vaccines, for dogs, humans, or anything. So how do I get a puppy socialized with other dogs? Is a puppy class enough?

There are lots of ways you can socialise a puppy. Firstly, the phrase socialisation refers to introducing your puppy to everything unusual. This can start from as soon as you get her home (ideally about 8 weeks). At this point she won't have been vaccinated so you should carry her to as many places as you can so that she can see cars, busses, other dogs, strange people, cyclists, livestock, birds...

In regard to actually meeting other dogs (as in a proper meeting, not just being carried past one) if you don't know any vaccinated dogs you should ask your vet or breeder to recommend a good puppy socialisation class as this is a good place to take your puppy to play with other dogs of a similar age.

Also, if you start carrying your dog around the park where you will eventually walk her you may find the other dog walkers are very friendly and you may get to know some dogs who are fully vaccinated who your puppy can play with.

Good luck
