Is this separation anxiety, or will he grow out of it?

My 10 week old puppy, Cocoa, has been doing great. The older dogs are playing with him and looking out for him, crate training and potty training are going well, and he's pretty much the ideal puppy. Until I have to leave him alone. I'm not even talking about leaving him alone for hours - if I get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, he cries and fusses at the door. If I walk out of a room to get a drink, he cries. Basically anytime he doesn't have a human with him, he throws a tantrum. He doesn't tear things up any more than usual (he's teething), but he acts like he's going to die if he doesn't see me come back.

I've never had this issue with any other puppies before, at least not with me only being gone for five minutes or less. My mother thinks it's just because he's young and he'll grow out of it, but I don't want to just ignore it and then it end up getting worse or being a major issue later.

It sounds like what is sometimes called isolation distress. It's pretty common in young pups. Look for some articles in the Whole Dog Journal on the subject of SA and you'll find some ways to help him be less anxious when you leave the room. Pat Miller and Nicole Wilde both have written articles for WDJ on the subject and you can find them if you google. There are also articles in the training and behavior section on the subject.

Thank you! I'll look into those articles and see what I can do.

My Leeloo was the same at 10weeks. We crate trained her, so come bed time we didn't hear from her all night. But if I were to leave the room, shed follow me to the babt gate and then would yell after me, horrible sounds. But we just did lots of training, me leaving the room and coming back when shes quiet, and increased the time gradually over a couple weeks (clicker training is great for this! And what ever you do don't give into his screeching. Sounds like theyre being abused but they're just having a tantrum. Its also important not to over praise him as it shows 'im missing out on this love' just a simple '*click* good boy *give treat and walk back out* if you get over excited so will he) but yes anyways, after doing all that with our Leeloo, at 13 weeks now I can leave the room without no noise, she still follows me to the gate but she knows im gonna come back. I even got to leave the apartment 5mins the other day. Popped her in her crate told her goodnight put a blanket on her crate and made the room dark, then left.

Aslong as youre consistent with training and don't give in to the squeals, hell get better.

Our next mission is leash teaining D:
