Hi there, I put this topic in the puppy forum because I am not sure if this is normal puppy behavior, or a more serious behavior issue.
I adopted a bloodhound mix pup, Brody, from the shelter a few months back. He was an abandoned stray, and was believed to be about a year old but since he's grown so much since then I think he may be a bit younger. He is about 50lbs and seems to have no concept of how big he is. He is very clumsy still and sometimes falls off couches and bumps into furniture when he doesn't quite turn sharp enough.
Unfortunately, he also jumps up on people and runs into them when playing. I've been working with him to halt the jumping and he's making some progress, but still crashes into me or others at the dog park. It's not intentional, he just gets so into chasing that he runs super fast and can't turn himself fast enough when there's a person or a tree in his way.
So my question is: is this a puppy thing that he'll grow out of, or is there a way to train him to not do this? He never deliberately runs into me or anyone else, but given that Brody's 50lbs and stands at perfect kneecap height right now, he could do some serious damage to the wrong person. ): What do I do? Do I stop him when he goes to chase or do I just wait for him to grow out of it?
