Ripping Grass

Our 11 week old puppy has been ripping up the grass in our yard. Not ALL the time, and when I distract him, he stops instantly, and honestly, I'm not making a big deal because he just seems to be exploring everything that's new. We've had him 2 weeks, so everything is new.

He seems to be playing with it and treating it like a game vs. eating it or being compulsive. He'll rip some up and shake it like he shakes his toys. He'll mouth it, but not really eat it or anything.

Should I be concerned? Should I make a bigger deal of stopping it whenever he does this? He's a Rat/Jack mix terrier. I have visions of him turning into a nonstop compulsive obsessive terror. lol.....but so far, he has a TON of energy but gets just as snuggly as he gets crazy.

I'd continue distract him - ideally before he actually starts ripping up the grass. It's not a huge deal (especially if you're not super concerned about your yard), but I suspect it's not something you want to become a habit.

If he likes to dig and tear up grass, you might create a space specifically for those behaviors and encourage him to dig and tear in his designated spot.

It seems like all dogs like eating grass or sticks or yard stuff IME. Scarlett will do the same and try to dig little holes in our common yard. I put my foot over the spot she's focused on and then try to distract with a toy, or something else.

I don't think moderate amounts of grass will hurt them. She chews up leaves and all kinds of stuff, even during her potty walks -- she gets distracted here and there by a sticky leaf -- and she seems to be fine.
