Question Question: How long should a walk be for a puppy?

Hi,

I was wondering what's a good distance/length of time to exercise a 15 week old pup. How long do you guys walk your pups?

We've got a 15 week old JRT/Dachshund mix and we walk her at a brisk pace (no running though) for about an hour twice a day. The route we take is roughly a 1 mile circuit, so that's 2 miles a day.

Scarlett is still pretty active when we come back, she's not panting, lagging behind or exhibiting signs of tiredness. Instead, when we get back to our place, she's ready to play more. But then she conks out about 10-15 mins later and naps for hours.

Thanks so much for the replies

I've always heard that 5 min per month of leashed walking (or other repetitive exercise) as a rule of thumb. I don't think the issue is the pup getting tired, it's more about joint and skeletal development. Allowing free running (i.e., pup unleashed in a fenced area) on soft surfaces isn't a big a problem.

Agreed, if possible this is a much better option for most pups. I understand that it's not an option in many cases, though. Two miles for a puppy that young seems like it may be a bit much, but I'm not an expert on it.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't know about that general rule of thumb - 5 mins per age in months. Yes, we've cut down her walks to about 15-20 mins of actual walking. The other 10 minutes is running into neighbors with dogs and doing the meet-n-greet, sometimes another five minutes or so of playing. Almost all our neighbors have dogs.

And of course, being the new puppy on the block everyone wants to meet her.

Free running is a bit hard for us (there is a dog park but meh, I'm not overly keen on going there) as we live in an apartment. We have common lawn space so I put her on a long leash and let her run around and nose the grass etc for about 20 minutes twice a day.

Thanks for the replies

When the main dog I walk was young I would let her off-leash and the pattern was this: Run around like CRAZY for 15 minutes, then collapse onto the grass for 10. Rinse and repeat.

Since this was so not conducive to your traditional leashed walk, the only leashed walking we wound up doing after a while was walking 5 minutes down to the park, and walking back afterwards!
